Window Well Covers

Basement flooding is on the rise in Ottawa. Every home is at risk of basement flooding, even if it has not happened before. Water in your basement is most likely to occur during a heavy rainfall, or when snow and ice is melting, but you can take steps to help reduce or prevent it from happening.

Window wells are plastic or metal products that surround a basement window to create a gap between the window and the ground. This allows sunlight in and/or creates an emergency point of egress from the basement. Window wells should have proper drainage and be cleaned regularly to prevent water accumulation. Window well covers can help prevent debris accumulation inside the well and reduce accumulation in slow draining wells.

What to look for

  • A custom-made window-well cover will fit better.
  • Durable window-well covers made of polycarbonate plastic are less likely to be damaged and will be needed to be replaced less frequently.
  • Hinged covers will be required if the window serves as an egress.
  • Should sit at least 10 – 15 cm (4 – 6″) above the ground.

Things to Consider

  • Window well covers are not a replacement for having a proper window-well drainage system that is professionally installed.
  • Take other measures around your home to prevent basement flooding, including installing a sump pump, a backflow valve and disconnecting your downspouts.
